With 100 editions in 67 countries, Rodale publishes the largest, most established health and wellness lifestyle brands, including Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Prevention, Rodale’s Organic Life, Runner’s World, and Bicycling.

From the very beginning in 1942, Rodale has been about health, wellness, the environment, and sustainability. We were sustainable before people used the word sustainable! In fact, Rodale, Inc. founder JI Rodale is considered the founder of the Organic Movement in America. A transplanted New Yorker, he and his wife Anna bought a farm in Pennsylvania, started a publishing company, and devoted their lives to making the world a healthier place. They lived the American Dream.

In 1942 JI launched Organic Farming and Gardening magazine, which started a food revolution we are still in the midst of. But JI and Anna weren't just concerned about food; they wanted people to be healthier in general, so they launched Prevention magazine in 1950. They also published bestselling books that are still in print today, such as The Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening and The Complete Book of Composting.

In 1971, their son Robert Rodale added a focus on fitness, publishing Runner's World and Bicycling magazines. Robert built a velodrome (a bicycle racing track). He also started the longest running scientific study comparing organic farming to "conventional" chemical farming at the non-profit Rodale Institute. Back when everyone said organic would never be a viable option for farmers, the Rodale Institute demonstrated that it could be. Scientists and farmers from around the world took notice. And today, thanks to the work at the Rodale Institute, we have the USDA Organic Certification program and similar certifications around the world so that you can trust that if a farmer says it's organic, it is truly organic.

But Robert Rodale also wasn't just concerned about food and farming, he was concerned about health, too, which is why he enabled the launch of Men's Health magazine and books like The Doctors Book of Home Remedies. Both of those brands were born in 1987 right before his untimely death in a car accident in Russia. Since then, Men's Health has become the largest men's magazine in the world, published in more than 40 countries. And the Doctors Book of Home Remedies, still in print today, has sold over 20 million copies.

Robert's wife, Ardie Rodale, led the company through the birth of the digital era, and the launch of Women's Health magazine, which is now the fastest-growing women's magazine around the world. She also led the company during the publication of The South Beach Diet, which transformed the way people in America eat and made whole grains available to everyone. Her commitment to the research at the Rodale Institute and the health of people around the world firmly established Rodale as the leading health and wellness publisher, with a growing digital presence.

Today, Rodale is firmly in the hands of the third generation of the family, under the leadership of Maria Rodale. Devoted to changing the world for the better, Maria is both the author of Organic Manifesto: How Organic Food Can Heal Our Planet, Feed the World, and Keep Us Safe and the publisher of books including An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore.

For more than 70 years, Rodale Inc. has been driven by its mission of inspiring and enabling people to improve their lives and the world around them.
